See if you can figure this out

Microsoft Interview. The following is taken from an employment interview with Microsoft.

"Given a gold bar that can be cut exactly twice and a contractor who must be paid one-seventh of a gold bar every day for seven days, how should the bar be cut?"

It shouldnt be cut just give him the whole gold bar at the end of the week. Pay periods are normally 2 weeks anyway.

No, Will. You cut it twice, giving you three pieces - the first 1/7, the second 2/7 and the third 4/7. You give him the first piece the first day. The second day, trade the second piece with the first. The third day, you give the first piece again. The fourth day, trade the two pieces with the third piece. The fifth day, give him the first piece. The sixth day, trade the second piece with the first. And the seventh day, give him the first piece again. Kinda confusing, huh? I harldy understand it myself.=D
